Arizona License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Arizona?

License plate renewal in Arizona updates the registration record and generates a new annual tab, which is sent to the address on file. The license plate number does not change. Most vehicles can register for one, two, or five years, depending on emissions requirements, according to the ADOT Motor Vehicle Department.

  • Each vehicle is assigned an expiration date, either the last day of the month or the 15th, set at the initial registration and retained throughout each renewal cycle.
  • Renewal differs from titling. Title transfer after a sale must occur separately at an MVD office or a third party before the registration can be renewed in the new owner’s name.
  • Passenger vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, travel trailers, and motorhomes all renew on this schedule. Non-commercial trailers weighing up to 10,000 pounds pay a one-time fee and do not renew annually, according to A.R.S. § 28-2003.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Arizona License Plate?

The MVD sends renewal notices by mail or email approximately 45 days before the expiration date. Lack of notice does not extend the term.

  • Vehicles requiring emissions testing can renew up to 90 days in advance. Vehicles exempt from emissions can renew up to six months before expiration.
  • Arizona does not provide a grace period after the expiration date. The late fee according to A.R.S. § 28-2162 begins immediately: $8 for the first month overdue, plus $4 for each additional month, capped at $100.
  • Emissions testing is mandatory for renewal in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. Vehicles five model years or newer, 1966 and older, and fully electric vehicles are exempt. Results are electronically transmitted to the MVD from any ADEQ testing station.
  • Outside these metro areas, no type of inspection is required before renewal.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Arizona

Before renewing, check that your insurance liability is current and your mailing address on file is correct. All registration documents and tabs are mailed; MVD offices do not issue them over the counter. If emissions testing applies, complete it before starting the renewal.

  • The AZ MVD Now portal is the MVD’s recommended channel. Enter your plate number and the last two digits of the VIN, confirm details, and pay. The portal is detailed in the online section below.
  • In-person renewal is available at any MVD office or authorized third-party location. You can also pay cash at over 500 CheckFreePay locations statewide.
  • The automated phone line at 1-888-713-3031 processes renewals using a credit card.
  • For mail-in renewal, send a check or money order payable to the Motor Vehicle Department (plate number written on the check) to the Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Department, PO Box 29008, Phoenix, AZ 85038.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Arizona?

The fixed registration fee is small; the vehicle license tax is where the bill increases, especially on newer vehicles with higher assessed values.

  • The basic registration fee is $8 for motor vehicles and $9 for motorcycles, according to A.R.S. § 28-2003. Depending on location, a $1.50 air quality fee and a $0.25 air quality compliance fee apply.
  • The Vehicle License Tax (VLT) replaces the personal property tax. For a new vehicle, the rate is $2.80 for every $100 of assessed value (60% of MSRP), decreasing by 16.25% each subsequent year. Used vehicles are taxed at a rate of $2.89 per $100. The minimum VLT is $10 per year, according to A.R.S. § 28-5801.
  • Two- or five-year registration locks in the VLT reduction for each year of the term. Only one $8 registration fee and one $0.25 compliance fee cover the entire multi-year term.
  • Late renewal adds $8 for the first month overdue and $4 for each subsequent month, up to $100 total.
  • Special plates add a $25 annual fee for each renewal. Personalized letters add another $25 annually, according to the ADOT license plate page.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Arizona?

Online renewal covers virtually all passenger vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers through AZ MVD Now. Initial registrations and title transfers cannot be completed on the portal. The site accepts credit cards, debit cards, and electronic checks with no additional service fees beyond what the MVD office charges, according to the ServiceArizona fee schedule.

Registration renewal occurs instantly upon payment. The digital receipt serves as proof of current registration, and physical tabs and documents arrive by mail within a few days. When the portal cannot process a renewal (outstanding fines, emissions non-compliance, or title issues), visit an MVD or third-party office.

  • Mail-in packages require a check or money order payable to the Motor Vehicle Department.
  • Write the plate number on the check and send it to PO Box 29008, Phoenix, AZ 85038.

If Arizona can renew your plate online, this route costs the same as in-office and updates your record immediately; the office and phone line handle what the portal refuses.
